Bio

Dr Suman K. Das was born in Calcutta, India as the oldest of 6 children. His father was a sports retailer and his mother was a housewife. He obtained his primary education at Metropolitan Institute Main and after graduation went directly to RG Kar Medical College for his premedical education and Medical School training. After he finished medical school and acquiring his MD in 1967, he worked one year as a house surgeon. He left for England for his post graduate training. While in England he received his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. While there he worked in Bath, Bristol, Newcastle upon Tyne, Bolton and Liverpool. He started and finished his plastic surgery training while in England. In 1978, he went to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto Canada to train in Craniofacial Surgery. Following this he went to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne Australia to train in microsurgery and hand surgery.

He arrived in the United States in 1980 and was Chief of Research in Plastic Surgery at UCLA and Wadsworth VA Hospital in Los Angelos for 2 ½ years. In 1982, he arrived in Jackson and did a residency in Plastic Surgery and became American Board Certified. After a brief period of time in private practice, Dr. Das went back to University of Mississippi Medical Center as the Chief of Plastic Surgery. He climbed the ranks as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and then made Full Professor in 1990.

In 1996, he went out into private practice. Currently he practices Plastic Surgery in Jackson with his office located in Flowood. He maintains his position as Clinical Professor of Surgery at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Dr. Das is very proactive about education primarily at the elementary and secondary levels. He is currently a partner with the Mississippi Children’s Museum, on the Board of Directors of Greater Jackson Community Foundation, and the Board of Directors of the St Dominic Community Outreach Program. He is a SmileTrain Partner and just returned from operating on cleft lip and cleft palate children in South India at Nagercoil. Dr. Das is the Past-President of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and is very active in all National Plastic Surgery Societies.

He is married to Roslyn and has 2 daughters, Louise and Natalie.
