Arm Lift

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), the number of arm lift procedures that have been performed over the last few years has dramatically increased. Also known as “brachioplasty,” arm lift surgery is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper portion of the arms. Although this procedure is usually performed on individuals who have lost a substantial amount of weight, an arm lift can be performed on anyone who desires slimmer and more defined arms. Some patients can achieve similar results with liposuction.

Best Candidates

Ideal candidates for arm lift surgery are individuals who have skin laxity in the upper arms and:

  • Are in good overall health

  • Are at a stable weight

  • Do not smoke

  • Have realistic expectations

During your initial consultation, Dr. Das will ask you some questions and evaluate your medical history to help you determine if an arm lift can be beneficial to you.

Technique

Arm lift surgery is done under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Dr. Das will make incisions on the inside of the arms that extend down to the elbow. If excess fat deposits exist, then liposuction will also be performed. The incisions are closed after the remaining tissue is tightened to a smoother and more well-defined contour.

Recovery

Once the procedure is complete, the arms will be bandaged and compression garments will be used to minimize swelling. Prescribed medication can be taken to minimize any pain or discomfort that exists over the next couple of days. Most patients return to work about a week after surgery, but should avoid any strenuous exercise or activity for at least four to six weeks until the incisions completely heal. It is of the utmost importance that patients follow Dr. Das’ postoperative instructions to ensure a swift and safe recovery.
