Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to remove excess skin and fat as a result of pregnancy, weight gain or loss, and the aging process. In this procedure, usually weak muscle and fascia are tightened to give a smooth look as well as removing stretch marks. There are sub-varieties like mini tummy tuck and lateral tension tummy tuck. Sometimes liposuction can be combined with the tummy tuck.  Dr. Das will discuss your options during your initial consultation.

Who is the right candidate?

  • Persons within the weight limit for their height, and in good physical health.

  • Persons who have unwanted excess skin and/or fat in the stomach.

  • Persons who have realistic expectations.

  • Persons who have had major weight loss and are now in good physical health.

Dr. Das will determine whether Tummy Tuck is the right procedure for your condition during the consultation.

What are the steps in Abdominoplasty surgery?

This procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and takes 2-4 hours depending on the extent. A cut is made above the pubis and is well hidden below the bikini line. Skin is raised over the muscle and fascia, cutting around the belly button, then the muscle and fascia tightened and the excess skin and fat trimmed from the lower end closing the skin at the suprapubic incision. You will see a video of the procedure during the consultation.

Usual Steps of Recovery

Following surgery, there may be some bruising and/or swelling as well as some pain and discomfort at the site of the cut. You may have to wear pressure dressing for several days.

Drains with tubes may be inserted to add in the recovery process and can usually be removed between 3 to 5 days. Patients can usually go back to work between 4 to 6 weeks after a tummy tuck.

How Long the Results Will Last?

The long-term results can last a lifetime with good lifestyle choices including but not limited to nutrition, exercise, and refraining from smoking.

What Are the Risks?

Like any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with Tummy Tuck surgery.  Possible complications are scarring, infection, tissue loss, and undesirable cosmetic results. Dr. Das will discuss all of these in detail during your consultation.
